Our History
Our journey of excellence in healthcare:
Foundation
Founded in 1942 E.C., Shashemene Comprehensive Specialized Hospital was established by the Sudanese Interior Mission with a primary focus on the treatment and care of leprosy patients. From its earliest days, the hospital was built on a mission of compassion, service, and commitment to improving community health.
Growth & Expansion
In 1968, the hospital was renamed Liāilt Tenagnework Haile Selassie Hospital and began delivering organized medical services with a small but dedicated workforce. In 1978, the hospital was officially transferred to government administration, marking a major milestone that enabled expansion of infrastructure, staffing, and medical services. Over the years, the hospital steadily evolved, adopting national healthcare reforms and expanding both outpatient and inpatient services to meet growing community needs.
Transformation & Improvement
As part of national health system strengthening, the hospital implemented key reform programs introduced by the Ministry of Health and Oromia Health Bureau. More recently, the hospital joined the System Bottlenecks Focused Reform (SBFR) initiative in collaboration with leading hospitals across the country, resulting in significant improvements in leadership, emergency care, surgical services, diagnostics, drug availability, and laboratory services.
Today
Today, Shashemene Comprehensive Specialized Hospital is recognized as a Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, serving a catchment population of over 3.2 million people. With 278 inpatient beds and a wide range of specialized services, the hospital continues to advance quality healthcare delivery through innovation, reform, and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.
